Moon sighting versus Moon fighting

The arrival of the month of Shaban offers a tired old subject to participants in Muslim events, even informal dinners and celebrations, and Internet chat groups: the day to start and end the month of Ramadan.

The issue of moon sighting has become moon fighting no less serious than the issue of chads and dimples on Florida ballots. In this case, both sides of the divide are divided over the question that what is really the ‘new’ moon. Interestingly, both sides of the divide base their arguments on the Hadith: "Do not fast unless you sight the crescent, and do not break your fast till you sight the (following) crescent.” (Al-Bukhari, Vol. 3:130).

2000 Presidential Election... Gore v Bush...and the movie Recount?

Don't let the Dems here blow a bunch of smoke up your rear.

Be aware that the movie is NOT a non-biased account of the events. It is a very definate Liberal (ala Michael Moore) presentation of the Florida fiasco. Notice how well Democrats are doing in Florida with their Primary right now. Same sh*t, different election.

The Democrats tried everything in their little book of tricks to change the election. Democrats designed and approved the infamous "butterfly" ballots. Watching Democrats examining ballots with magnifying glasses to find dimpled, creased, scratched, hanging, crimped, or dented chads "to determine voter intent" was an absolute joke. At the same time, their army of NY lawyers was up in the panhandle of Forida throwing out hundreds of absentee ballots for such things as forgeting their middle initial. (note that most of these were military people who voted Republican). The curx of the deal was this, the Dems wanted to only do the recount in selected areas. The Florida Consititution is very clear on recounts. The first is that the recount MUST take place by a certain number of days after the election. The 2nd was that in this case (state wide issue), the recount MUST include the ENTIRE state, not just those areas most likey to give them the votes they needed. That is the reason the Fed Supreme Court kept giving it back to the very Liberal Florida Supreme Court.

In the year or so following the election, several major media groups did their own recounts of the ballots in the disputed areas. NO ONE found that Gore won.

Here is a final note. Gore needed 11 electoral votes to win. There were several other states that were just as close as Florida but none had 11 or more votes up for grabs, only Florida had the votes he needed. Al Gore's home state of TN had 11 electoral votes. The same state that has about 800 bridges, buildings, parks, schools, roads, mountains, nursing homes, tunnels, hot dog stands and health care facilities named for Gore's father Senator Al Gore SR. Big Al himself was a long time Senator and a 8 year Vice President but still failed to carry his home state. Bush handed Gore his head in TN. No one on the Democrats side cares to go anywhere near that issue. They approach it like a dead skunk in the middle of the road; Roll the windows up, turn the a/c on recycle and swerve to one side.
