How was your day: horse section?

I had a cool day. I rode my horse for the first time today!! YAY! I just got him a week ago and he's never been ridden before. So, I jumped on today and waited for the ride of my life because I wasn't sure he was ready. He seemed like it, but I'm not that experienced so I could have been wrong. Well, I get on and he stands there. Completely accepts me on his back. But he WOULDN'T walk. I tried everything and he sorta just stood there. Lol, it was funny. But then I went horsey shopping and I love buying them things. So, overall it was a great day. Most of it with my horses.

Any day that is spent with my horses is a great day!!!

What Modern Day Jobs Do Horses have?

What Modern Day Jobs Do Horses have?

The primary working horse types these days I would say are as follows:

Police horses: Horses allow police officers to see over the tops of crowds easily, move through congested streets more easily than cars, provide a strong visual presence for mounted police, and also a strong physical presence as a deterrent. For the reasons police forces around the world still have mounted sections.

Army Horses: Mainly for ceremonial purposes for parades etc. Usually this is for regiments that started life as cavalry. One example is the Queens Household Cavalry in England - now the modern regiment is mechanized cavalry but the horses are still awesome to see on ceremonial occasions!

Draught horses: I live in a town where at least one pair of draught horses is employed in pulling a large cart with a water tank mounted on it. They go round the pedestrian areas watering the civic flowerbeds.

Racehorses: Goes without saying.

Riding Stables Horses: Horses employed at stables to help people who dont own their own horses to learn to ride.

There's prolly more but those are the main ones i can think of!

Worst day ever with your horse?

Worst day ever with your horse?

That does sound like a frustrating day- I'm sorry.

Worst day with my horse happened about 2 months ago.

I had sprained my ankle the day before in a riding accident with him, so I was hopping around on crutches.

I had my Mom come help me bring his breakfast down to him. I called him in- and then disaster struck.

There is a little wooden bridge across a creek that my horse has to cross to get to his feeding area. The bridge had just been temporarily fixed.

He walked across the bridge, and got his shoe stuck on a protruding nail. He stood there for a second, trying to shake it off, and then got scared.

He ripped his shoe off, and fell off the side of the bridge.

He pulled himself back up, and limped over to me on three legs, blood pouring down his hind leg.

I felt so hopeless- I couldn't have done anything even if I tried, and with my ankle severely sprained, I would probably have made things worse.

He ended up having a huge slice on his leg that could have used stitches. We called the vet in, and they had to cut off a couple flaps of skin that were hanging off and give him an anti-toxin tetanus shot.

I've had days that were much more serious than that- but I was just so hopeless, and watching the whole thing really emotionally drained me.
