Question about the Baha’i Faith?

I don't have access to the internet every day. Baha'u'llah promised there would not be another Messenger until the lapse of 1,000 years. Since we have over 800 more years to go, I don't worry about it. There are so many other things to accomplish in the meantime: build up our local Baha'i communities, help others learn about the Message of Baha'u'llah, etc.

Each of us can in our own way manifest the attributes of God, but we are qualitatively different from God - we are created by God, we have to use already created things to make our creations. We cannot create something out of non-existance.

There is so much to learn. Study the Book of Certitude (Kitab-i-Iqan), that will be very helpful. And pray. I pray constantly.

Sincerely,

dlherrmann

Baha'u'llah: Prophet? Messiah? Avatar (God incarnate)? Mystic? Reincarnate of Jesus? Who is he really?

The best way to get authentic, comprehensive information about your questions is to visit some official Baha'i websites; I've listed a couple below. You could also check wikipedia; although I cannot vouch for the authenticity of the information on that site's articles on the Baha'is, I do know that Baha'i pages are monitored very closely by Baha'i volunteers to make sure they're not vandalized.

Some Baha'i core beliefs:

+ Oneness and Unity of Mankind

+ One God (monotheism)

+ Full, true equality of men and women

+ Elimination of all kinds of prejudice--racial, ethnic, tribal, sexual, etc

+ World Peace is not only possible, it's inevitable

+ Independent investigation of truth (which precludes the need for clergy - more on this below)

+ All religions are fundamentally the same message, updated from time to time by Manifestations that God sends down to teach mankind for that day according to his capacity to understand. Each Manifestation builds on the message of the one prior, keeping fundamental religious truths and modernizing social truths and laws. This idea is called Progressive Revelation. The Baha'i Faith's Manifestations are The Bab and Baha'u'llah.

Some daily practices and worship:

+ Prayer at least once a day via one of 3 obligatory prayers; prayer is encouraged throughout the day, however, and there are prayers written for almost every occasion

+ Worship is typically done in the homes of believers; or if the community is large enough, a local Baha'i Center. Baha'is do not have churches. There are large Houses of Worship, one on each continent (and one under construction in S. America); but they are very different from your traditional idea of a church/mosque/temple. Houses of Worship are open to any believer and are not typically places for congregational worship, but places of meditation, personal reflection, and prayer. They are exceedingly beautiful and majestic.

+ There is no clergy; each believer is responsible for his own spiritual education and guidance. We are all our own shepherds, because in this day and age mankind is generally well-educated and able to understand complex ideas without the need for a clergy. In past times, often clergy were the only people in an entire community that had an education, could read and write, etc.

+ There are very few set rituals in the Baha'i Faith; the religion instead prefers communities to have the freedom to do things in a free-form way in which they feel comfortable. In that respect there are only minimal traditions for weddings, funerals, devotionals, holiday commemorations, and so forth.

+ Baha'is have their own set of holidays, typically based around major events in the Faith's history--births, deaths, declarations, etc.

+ There is a 19-day fasting period from March 2-20 where Baha'is refrain from food and water from sunup until sundown each day.

Baha'u'llah: Baha'is believe that Baha'u'llah is the latest Manifestation of God, a spiritual return of Christ, the fulfillment of prophecies by every major religion including Islam. Baha'u'llah brought with him messages and teachings that carry forward our civilization into a new era. He is theologically equivalent to Christ, Muhammad, Buddha, Krishna, and Zoroaster. Baha'is believe that Baha'u'llah (and all the Manifestations) was human, yet a "perfect reflection" of God - and thus to say He is God is also true, just as Jesus said He was God.

There are a ton of other concepts and ideas, of course, but to answer them all here would be too time-consuming. I definitely encourage you to visit the sites linked below, especially the US Baha'i site.

I hope I have helped in your research!
