Apricot Day

Very few people know that just three apricots will provide an individual with a third of your daily beta carotene demands. This is simply among the perks of this fruit that are commemorated on Apricot Day! Apricots are likewise rich in vitamin C, vitamin A and fiber.

Apricots have been grown by people for around 4,000 years. Initially from China, these healthy stone fruits migrated west and now around 95 % of the world's oranges are expanded in California.

To commemorate Apricot Day, a great concept is to prepare a meal like poultry tagine with oranges and almonds. These little orange fruits work out in both savoury and wonderful recipes, and many individuals are familiar with them in flans and breads. Oranges are available in dried and canned kind also, so they could deliver their perks all the time, not simply on Apricot Day.

Can dogs eat apricots????

"Apples, Apricots, Cherries, Peaches and Plums: Ingestion of large amounts of stems, seeds and leaves of these fruits can be toxic. They contain a cyanide type compound and signs of toxicity include apprehension, dilated pupils, difficulty breathing, hyperventilation and shock."

The fruit doesn't appear to be toxic, but if your dog is like mine he isn't just daintily eating around the seeds, stems, and leaves. For this reason, I'd restrict access to the trees - barricade with fencing, or something. And watch for those symptoms... if any appear, your dog needs to see the vet.

Growing apricot trees?

Growing apricot trees?

Good evening Kiwi,

I hope you are having a great day. I just finished my daily walk at Venice Beach. I am heading for the high Mojave Desert on Monday to see the meteor showers. I hope you will get a good view. In the summer, I plan my camping trips around meteor showers.

Your seeds should/need to be scarified. I use a file, but you can use sandpaper. When we were kids, we would use the concrete sidewalks. The sidewalk works better than sandpaper but watch out for your fingers. Do not put your seeds in the freezer. That is to cold. The refrigerator is fine. Most varieties of apricot seeds need to be below 45 degrees for 300 plus hours. I hope this answers your questions.

There are dozens of apricot varieties. Beware that some apricots do NEED a pollinator in order to bear fruit. Some even need a different variety as a pollinator. Do you know what variety your seeds are from?

I hope you consider this report informative. May I please ask you a question? Do you know that most (over 95%) fruits and vegetables you buy from the grocery stores are commercially grow, not for their favor, but because they import/export better. Although the fruits taste okay, most people never know how great a real apricot can taste. They have nothing to compare. Some of the best tasting fruits in the world cannot be exported. For example: I grow a Strawberry Guava Tree. You will not see them in the grocery store because they are too costly to export. The Guavas are sweeter and taste better than a strawberry. Guavas are also called the “super fruit” because they contain more vitamins and nutrients than an orange. There are hundreds (second website) of other fruits just like the guava. Kiwi, why not grow the best.

Also because of the speed of transportation, your apricots may have come from another country or area. The variety may need a difference chill factor and may not grow good in your area. This chill factor would be especially important in a country with difference planting zones like New Zealand. You would be wasting years of your hard work and time.

Also, an apricot tree planted from seed, depending on weather, variety, and soil, can take seven (7) or eight (8) years before you get a huge crop. I am talking about a family of four (4) enjoying fresh apricots. This would include enjoying dried or canned apricots for months.

I was from a poor family. We had to start everything from seed. I know starting from seeds are cheaper, but seedlings/bare roots from the nursery will produce in three years. Plus you pick the best variety for your area. This is very important.

I have nine (9) rare fruit trees and a 20x20 vegetable garden. Right now we are finishing up on our Christmas baskets to our relatives and friends. The baskets contain dried fruits, fresh fruits, and quart jars of fruits, vegetables, jams and jellies. They love to see us coming at Christmas.

I totally research every fruit tree before I plant it. Do you know the Blenheim Apricot is the best tasting apricot in the world? It is also the best tasting after it is dried. The tree is very pretty. My tree is over ten (10) years old. Hopefully you can grow it in your area. It does cost more than other apricot trees. Right now I am researching and thinking about planting a Peanut Better Tree.

I hope I have answered your question. I also hope I have given you something to think about. Sorry about the length. I really enjoy helping other home gardeners.

Good luck, Kiwi. You and your family have a beautiful holiday season. Peace, from Los Angeles.
