There is a lot of confusion around this imaginary friend thing. My daughter has dreams and talks about them as if they were real. She plays with her imaginary friend, has memories of him, and can express his needs. It isn't that hard to understand if you just accept that children have absolutely incredible imaginations. It isn't hallucination, and it isn't "just for fun". It is imagination working right out there in the open. For real purposes. Something adults don't do with such ease.

Did you never lay in bed at night imagining yourself in different scenarios? Children do this with no shame and do it all day long. They see no purpose in making a distinction between these scenarios (like an imaginary friend scenario) and real events. While they may be able to distinguish between the two if pressed, they will still take the attitude "what's the point in making the distinction anyways?" And they are right. For their age, it is extremely rewarding for them and also a good way to learn through play and cause/effect activities, and there is no point in correcting them. For us, as adults, we couldn't get through the day safely.

Asking kids years later to recall their imaginary friends is like asking them to remember a tower they made from legos on a certain day. The friends don't get any special consideration. They get lots of affection, and my daughter often feels the need to stick up for "Nate", so it is obviously important, but it is all part of a big jumble of imagination play.

How can the God Squad be allowed to hijack my kids weekend like this?

Um tell your kids to wait a day or two? Holidays will happen - regardless of religion. You can't just be a consumer every day.

Maybe interact with them?

IE. Board games, hiking outside, going to the park, bake something together, dress up as Mr. Incredible.
